"Men's scent" doesn't mean much.
Walk through the grooming aisle and apparently men are supposed to smell like some combination of ice, mountains, darkness, steel and explosions.

Most men's soap scents fall somewhere across a few broad families.
Here's how to find yours.
Fresh Scents
Fresh fragrances are probably the easiest place to start.
They're clean, crisp and generally easy to live with every day.
Think:
- Cool air
- Water
- Clean linen
- Light citrus
- Green notes
They're especially good for morning showers, warmer weather or anyone who doesn't want a particularly heavy fragrance.
If your grooming products usually say things like "fresh," "aqua," "sport" or "clean," you're probably already somewhere in this category.

Woodsy Scents
Woodsy fragrances trade some of the brightness of fresh scents for something more grounded.

Should Men's Soap Smell Like Cologne?
It certainly can move in that direction.
There's nothing about traditional soap that says it has to smell plain or old-fashioned.

That means traditional cold-process soap can occupy some of the same fragrance territory as modern men's grooming products.
We think that's a good thing.
You shouldn't have to choose between real soap and soap that smells great.
How Strong Should the Scent Be?
There's a difference between a soap smelling great and a soap trying to replace your cologne.
Soap is a rinse-off product.
The shower should be the main event.
You should be able to enjoy the fragrance while you're using the bar and working up a lather. But if you want something specifically designed to project fragrance for hours, that's what cologne and other leave-on fragrance products are designed to do.
We'd rather make the shower smell fantastic than pretend a bar of soap is a bottle of cologne.
Does a Soap Scent Smell Different in the Shower?
It can.
Warm water, steam and lather can change the way you perceive a fragrance compared with smelling the dry bar in its box.
That's one reason buying soap based solely on a written scent description isn't perfect.
